A PDF lands in Gmail. You need one page gone, a signature on the last page, and a file small enough to send back in WhatsApp. Adobe Acrobat on Android will preview it, then put the useful buttons behind a subscription. That job does not need a laptop or a credit card.

This is the phone version of the task: open the file you already have, change it, and send the new one. Use the free MyPocketPDF Android app. The same tools exist in the browser if you would rather not install anything, including on a work phone that blocks the Play Store.

What “edit a PDF” means on a phone

People say “edit” and mean five different jobs.

Reorder, delete, or rotate pages. Phones are good at this. You can see the whole packet as thumbnails and drag.

Sign or fill a short form. Draw with a finger or type a name and place it on the line.

Make the file smaller. WhatsApp and school portals reject large PDFs. Compress is the search that happens on the bus, not at a desk.

Turn paper into a PDF, or a PDF into Word or images. Scan and convert.

Change the sentences inside a paragraph so the lines reflow like Word. That last one is the hard job. A phone PDF editor can add a signature, a highlight, page numbers, and a note. It is not a place to rewrite a 40-page contract. If the sentences are wrong, convert to Word, fix them, and export a PDF again. If the pages, the signature, or the file size are wrong, stay on the phone.

Get the PDF onto the phone

You usually already have it. The missing step is opening it in a tool instead of the preview.

Gmail or Outlook: open the attachment, then share it to MyPocketPDF, or use Open with. The app registers as a PDF viewer, so Android can offer it from the share sheet and from Files.

WhatsApp or Telegram: tap the document, then the share icon, then MyPocketPDF. Do that before you forward it. Forwarding first sends the unedited file, and then you are explaining the mistake in the same chat.

Files or Downloads: open the PDF. If another viewer grabs it, long-press and choose Open with.

Nothing but paper on the table: Cam Scan inside the app. Flat light, hold the phone square, capture every page in order, then edit that PDF. The scan-to-PDF guide covers the camera work and the QR handoff when the rest of the job is on a computer.

Photos that are already JPGs in the camera roll are not a scan. Use JPG to PDF. Scanning is for paper. Combining photos is a different button.

Remove, rotate, and reorder pages

Bank statements show up as twelve tiny PDFs, or as one PDF with a blank page and a sideways phone photo in the middle. Open the file and look at thumbnails before you tap delete. The usual miss is removing page 3 because the preview was zoomed in and the blank was actually page 4.

Rotate the sideways page. Drag the rest into the order a person will read. Merge when the statement was split across emails — Merge PDF. Split when a portal wants one document per upload and you are holding a packet — Split PDF. Remove pages is the same idea as on the website.

Name the result before it disappears into Downloads.

statement-march.pdf
is findable.
DOC-20261023.pdf
is where PDFs go to die on a phone. Glance at the join when you merge: the unsigned copy stacked on the signed copy is a mistake you only notice after send.

Sign a form without printing it

Leases, permission slips, offer letters, the form a clinic emails and wants back today. Open the PDF, choose sign, draw or type, place it on the line, export.

A finger signature looks less like a pen than people want. Landlords and university portals still accept it on a one-page form. If they insist on ink, the app cannot fake that. Print, sign, then scan the page. Do not photograph a signature on a napkin and paste the crop over the line.

Sign before you password-protect. A locked PDF will not take a new signature until it is unlocked, and you can only unlock a file when you already know the password. Order: fix pages, sign, then protect if the file has an ID number or a bank page. The sequence is the same one in sign, then protect.

Filling a twelve-page government form with your thumbs is misery. Use a laptop for that. A one-page slip that arrived on the phone should be finished on the phone. That is the case the app is for.

Zoom in on the line before you place the signature, then zoom out and look at the whole page. A mark that looked perfect at 300% often sits on the paragraph above the line.

Make it small enough to send

WhatsApp’s document cap and Gmail’s 25 MB limit are why “compress PDF” is searched from phones. The attachment that was fine in email becomes impossible the moment someone says “just WhatsApp it.”

Open the PDF, compress, then send that new file. Check the size in Files first. If it still fails, the pictures inside are the weight. A textbook scanned at full camera resolution will not become a tiny file and stay readable. Compress for the channel: email can carry a clearer file than a chat app.

The email compression guide walks through quality choices. Same rule on Android. Compress, open the result, read one paragraph of small text, then send. If the text turned to gray mush, step back one quality level. Photographing the screen to “make it smaller” only makes a blurrier file.

A common miss: the chat still attaches the original. After compress, the new file is in Downloads. Attach that one. The message you received is still the big file.

Scan, then fix the scan

Paper on the kitchen table is an Android job. A laptop camera can do it. The phone is the camera you can hold square to the page.

Cam Scan in the app gives you edge detection and one PDF for many pages. Send it to a computer with the QR code if the rest of the work is on a PC. If the rest of the work is “sign and WhatsApp,” stay in the app and skip the computer.

Crooked text: deskew after the scan if the lines run uphill. Pencil notes: black-and-white filter, which usually looks sharper than a yellow photo of white paper. Need copy-paste later: OCR. OCR needs a readable page. A shadow across a paragraph comes back as garbage words. Light the page, run OCR, then read one sentence before you trust the text layer. Capture in reading order. Reordering after you have signed page 8 is how people sign the wrong sheet.

Convert on the phone

Word to PDF when a portal rejects DOCX and the only device nearby is the phone. Word to PDF. Office conversion uses the internet. Airplane mode will not turn a DOCX into a faithful PDF. That is a rendering job, not a local page shuffle.

PDF to Word when the sentences themselves have to change and a highlight is not enough. PDF to Word, open the DOCX in Google Docs or Word, fix it, export PDF again if the receiver wants PDF. Expect a simple letter to survive. Expect a magazine layout to need a human look.

Images to PDF for photos already in the camera roll. PDF to JPG when a form stupidly accepts only images. Excel and PowerPoint follow the Word rule: connection on, then convert. A one-sheet invoice is a phone job. A spreadsheet with print areas and repeating headers is still a computer job.

Lock it, or black out a number

Password-protect before you email a photo of an ID or a bank page. Send the password in a different channel than the file. Not the next line in the same WhatsApp thread. Protect PDF.

Unlock only when the password is yours or you are allowed to open the file. The app does not break passwords.

Redact when the page shows an account number you should not forward. A black box drawn in a photo app is not redaction if someone can lift the box and read the text underneath. Use Redact PDF, then send the redacted file, not the original you still have in the chat.

App, or the website on the same phone

Both are MyPocketPDF. The Android app is the right door when the PDF arrives in Gmail, WhatsApp, or Files and you want Open with. The website is the right door in a desktop browser, or on a phone browser when you cannot install apps: a work profile, a borrowed phone, a Chromebook.

Many page tools run on the device once the app or the page has loaded. Word, Excel, and PowerPoint conversion need a connection. A contract conversion is not an offline promise.

Neither one asks you to create an account to start. You are not building a cloud folder of every PDF you touch.

Install from Google Play: MyPocketPDF. If you are already in the phone browser, the Android app page has the same button and a straight list of what the app covers.

When the phone is the wrong tool

A 300-page scanned book. A layout you are rewriting. A PDF with dozens of form fields and a deadline in an hour. A file so large the phone stalls. Move those to a computer. Email the file to yourself, or use the QR handoff from Cam Scan, then merge, compress, or edit on the site.

If the only computer is a library PC that will not let you install software, the website is the product you wanted. The app is for the phone you own. Free a little storage first. A full phone will pretend to save a compressed scan and then not.

When something fails

The share sheet does not list MyPocketPDF. Update the app from Play, then share again. Android caches the old Open with list. From Files, long-press the PDF.

The PDF opens blank. It may be a scan with no text, or a renamed image, or a damaged download. Try OCR. Open the same file on the website. Repair PDF is for damaged files, not for passwords you forgot.

Conversion spins, then fails. Check the connection. Office files convert online. A password-protected Word file has to be opened and saved without that password in Word or Google Docs first. The converter cannot guess the DOC password.

The signature is enormous. Place it again, smaller. Zoom out before you export.

WhatsApp still says the file is too large. You attached the original from the chat. Attach the compressed file from Downloads and confirm the size in Files.

The scan is unreadable. You were too close, or the page was curled. Step back until the whole page is in the frame, flatten the paper, capture again. Compression will not sharpen a blurry photo. If you delete pages after adding page numbers, number the packet again once the order is final.

A path you can repeat

Open the PDF from the app that received it. Fix pages, then the signature, then the size, then the password. Read one page of the result on the phone. Send that file. Rename it so you can find it tomorrow.

Open the Android app page for the install button and the tool list. On a computer, start at the PDF editor or the tool that matches the job: merge, sign, compress, Cam Scan.

Next reads: fill and sign on a phone, scan a document to PDF, compress for email.
