You merged three files, everything looks fine, then someone asks “what page is the signature on?” and you realize there are no page numbers. Or the thesis portal wants “Page X of Y” in the footer and Word’s numbering broke the moment you exported to PDF.

That is the whole job: add page numbers to a PDF without buying Acrobat and without retyping the document. Here is how to do it free with Page Numbers, when to do it in the workflow, and the mistakes that put “1” on top of a signature line.

Number the final packet—not every draft

Page numbers are a finishing step. If you still need to reorder pages, delete blanks, or change paper size, do that first. Otherwise you renumber twice and swear at the footer.

Sane order for most people:

  1. Build the packet — Merge or Organize (combine and rearrange guide)
  2. Fix sideways / crooked pages — Rotate, Deskew (deskew guide)
  3. Match paper size if the portal cares — Resize (A4/Letter guide)
  4. Add page numbers — Page Numbers
  5. Compress or protect if needed — Compress, Protect

I have watched people number a packet, then delete page 2, then wonder why the numbers jump. Order first. Numbers last.

How to add them on MyPocketPDF

Open Page Numbers. Drop your PDF in. Pick where the number sits (bottom center is the usual “don’t fight me” choice; bottom right is common for reports). Choose a format—plain

1
,
Page 1
, or
1 of 10
style if the tool offers a fraction format. Set the start number if you skipped a cover (start at 1 on the first content page, or start at 0/1 depending on what the rubric says—read the instructions once).

Preview if you can. Then apply and download. Rename it

thesis-numbered.pdf
so you do not overwrite the unnumbered master.

Password on the file? Unlock first (unlock guide).

Still in Word? Convert with Word to PDF (Word guide), then number the PDF. Numbering inside Word is fine until you merge scans afterward—then you need PDF numbering anyway.

Page Numbers vs Header & Footer vs Watermark

Logo or stamped text across the pageWatermark

Do not use a watermark when you only need “3” in the corner. You will hate how it sits on charts.

Real jobs this fixes

Thesis / dissertation. Cover with no number, content starts at 1, or Roman numerals in the front matter if your school is old-school—check the handbook. Many schools accept simple Arabic numbers on every content page. Do not invent a fancy scheme the portal will reject.

Merged lease packet. Application + ID scan + signed addendum. Merge first (merge guide), then number so “see page 7” means something in email.

Client report. Continuous numbers after you glued appendix PDFs on. If the appendix already had its own “Page 1,” those old numbers stay unless you cover them—new numbers layer on. If double numbering looks dumb, start from a clean export or crop/cover later; usually people live with it for internal drafts.

Print shop handoff. Shops ask for numbered pages so they can say “pages 12–14 are color.” Save everyone a phone call.

Mistakes that look dumb in print

Numbering before resize. Footers land in different places on A4 vs Letter. Resize first—change paper size guide.

Numbering before rotate. Upside-down page gets a number in the “wrong” corner relative to the text. Rotate first (rotate guide).

Tiny font on a dense footer. Bump size until you can read it on a phone preview. If it collides with existing footer text from Word, move position (try bottom center vs bottom right) or strip the old footer in Word and reconvert.

Protecting first. You cannot stamp numbers on a locked PDF. Unlock → number → Protect again if you still need a password (password guide).

Expecting Bates stamps for court. Simple page numbers are not full Bates numbering with prefixes. If a court clerk asked for Bates, ask them what format they mean before you improvise.

Cover pages and “Page 1 of N”

Schools and offices disagree about covers. Some want the cover unnumbered and content starting at 1. Some want every sheet numbered. Some want

i, ii, iii
then Arabic—which is a pain in a simple stamp tool. If the handbook demands Roman front matter, do that part in Word before export, or accept that a free online stamp is for straightforward Arabic numbers on the body.

For

1 of N
, use the fraction-style format if the tool lists it. Double-check N matches the real page count after you deleted blanks. Nothing looks worse than “Page 12 of 11.”

After the numbers are on

Too big for email? Compress—compress guide. Need gray scale for the print room? Grayscale—gray scale guide—do grayscale before numbering if the footer color matters, or after if you only care about body ink. Sensitive packet? Protect last.

If you spot a wrong order after numbering, fix order in Organize, then run Page Numbers again on a clean unnumbered copy if you still have one. Stacking a second set of numbers on a renumbered file is how footers turn into soup.

FAQ

Can I skip the cover? Yes—set start page / start number so numbering begins where the content starts. Exact controls depend on the tool UI; use preview.

Will it remove old numbers? No. It adds new ones. Clean source if old numbers fight you.

Phone okay? Short files yes. Long theses—laptop is less painful.

Is it free? Yes for normal use on Page Numbers—no watermark from us on the output.
